Water Treatment Systems
The City of Irrigon has recently (2009) completed major milestones in our long term (since 1999) water systems update plan.
The updates address two main areas: Updating the potable water systems to address water quality issues and replacing old waste water treatment systems that were at capacity. In addition to quality improvement, the system updates were designed to accomodate growth through 2020 and beyond.
Potable water system updates include a new storage tank south of the city on Division Street, new water treatment facility, obtaining new sources of water and the beginning stages of replacing selected water mains, fire hydrants and residential supply piping. As a result, in 2009, nitrate levels in the city drinking water supply went from unacceptably high to undetectable.
The waste water treatment updates include a new, larger waste water treatment facility that reduced the level of nitrates in the effluent; the addition of 173 new sewer services and the continuing converstion of the old style residential septic/sewer hybrid systems to conventional sewer systems.
Since 1999, the City of Irrigon has spent $4.8 million on water system updates. While no water system is ever completely done evolving and updating, the city is well situated for current needs and future demand for clean drinking water, water for fire and other emergency services and efficient sewer and waste water treatment.
